ECO Origin University of Cambridge

Air Liquide are delighted to have been involved in the new Cavendish Laboratory Ray Dolby Centre at the University of Cambridge.  This state of the art centre will push the boundaries of physics research in the UK and globally.  The centre opened in summer 2025, comprises 173 laboratories and will involve research across a broad spectrum of disciplines, from DNA exploration to fundamental particles research.

Air Liquide has installed 2 x  ECO ORIGIN™ liquid nitrogen vessels (60000L + 35000L), associated vaporisers, changeover control panels, related insulated pipework and telemetry.  What is ECO ORIGIN™ all about?

ECO ORIGIN™ a simple switch:  Reduce scope 3 emissions without changing anything in your process – easy as that.  The same quality, with a lower carbon intensity, ECO ORIGIN™ gases, like all other gases in our portfolio, comply with rigorous quality standards specific to your activity (research, food & medical grade, etc).

Key points of the ECO ORIGIN™ include:

  • Low-carbon production: Gases (oxygen, nitrogen, argon) are produced using 100% renewable energy, verified by Guarantees of Origin
  • Reduced transportation emissions: Achieved through alternative fuels and logistics optimization, with residual emissions compensated via Gold Standard Foundation or Plan Vivo projects
  • Verified methodology: The ECO ORIGIN™ methodology and calculations are annually verified by a third party (to ISO 14021), and the product carbon footprint is verified to ISO 14067
  • Significant carbon footprint reduction: ECO ORIGIN™ gases reduce Scope 3 carbon footprint by over 70% compared to standard gases, allowing customers to reduce emissions without process changes
  • Maintained quality: ECO ORIGIN™ gases meet the same rigorous quality standards as other Air Liquide gases
